About The Band

"Doug Lawrence is the tall tenor of choice to represent Dexter Gordon. He who sits in Lester Young's seat on the Basie band reigns supreme!" Maxine Gordon

"Louis Hayes is a living legend. He was the drummer on Dexter's Grammy® Winning "Homecoming" album and he is also known for his monumental recordings with Cannonball Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Horace Silver and numerous others. This year Louis' new album on Blue Note Records has been nominated for 6 Grammy's®.

For over a quarter century Eric Reed has been in demand as the "firstcall" pianist for musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Billy Higgins, Gerald Wilson, Teddy Edwards and others. Eric is a prolific band leader himself with 26 album releases under his name with such jazz illuminary as Ron Carter, Jose' James, Al Foster and others.

John Webber has been the bassist of choice for a veritable "who's who" of tenor saxophonists including Johnny Griffin and Junior Cook, and for the last 20 years Eric Alexander, George Coleman and Doug Lawrence. John has also recorded with jazz legends Jimmy Cobb, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Horace Silver and many others.

Trumpeter Kris Johnson was picked by Maxine Gordon herself to hold down the chair in the Dexter Gordon Legacy Quintet that the Legendary Woody Shaw occupied in Dexter's quintet in the 1980's. Kris, another product of Detroit's thriving jazz scene, has been Doug's bandmate with the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra for the last 10 years.
